Is social media really changing the face of business and public services? Where are the best examples of its use? And most importantly - is there life after Twitter? These were some of the questions being asked at last week’s Social Media 09 held at the Thistle Hotel in London organised by Mashup* Events.
Digital Public’s Josh Feldberg and Jonathan Akwue joined celebrity speakers such as Sarah Beeny (co-presenting with her newborn baby), and Engine’s advertising luminary Robin Wight (pictured) to answer these – and many more questions.
As is now standard for social media events, a large screen projected a live ‘Twitterfall’ of comments from the delegates, the most popular of which came from Jon Silk, known on Twitter as ‘PRgeek’ who summed up his view of the lessons learned from the first few speakers:
“Old Media: Stick a celeb in an ad. New media: stick a celeb on the web. Social Media: Stick a celeb on Twitter.”
Fortunately as the event continued, more varied and wide ranging examples of how social media is being used in business and in the public sector emerged. You can find a witty summary of the event by Alan Patrick here.
